So what Is chaos magic? Chaos magic is often misunderstood and difficult to define. Sometimes referred to as “success magic” or “results-based magic”. It uses focused energy to disrupt the universe. Doing so to achieve specific, desired results. This magical practice is cultivated around using any idea or ritual you wish to implement. Combining different practices and beliefs even if they contradict each other. Chaos magic forces practitioners to be continually transforming. A very personalized and eclectic practice of magic. This reliance on result-orientated magic often pushes its practitioners to get continually better results and to examine methods that do not seem to be working. In this post, I will go over what is Chaos Magic, the history, and how to implement it in your own magical practices.

What is Chaos Magic and Why Does it Matter?
Chaos magic involves the practitioner directing energy. Doing this to affect turbulence, that is naturally occurring inside our physical world. If you can achieve a state of “gnosis” and use that energy directionally you can change your world around you. Those who practice this newer more chaotic version of magic are also known as “Choates”. “Choates” are only concerned with discovering the working truths of magic. Doing so by ridding their practices of traditional magical tools like candles, robes, and incense. Then they are able to develop a truly unique approach to the magic they are practicing. For the chaos magician, all you need to practice magic is willpower, the ability to reach an altered state of consciousness, and the techniques of sorcery. Nothing else is essentially needed.
“Any act, if in accordance with the will, is an act of magic.”
― Aleister Crowley, Magick in Theory and Practice
The History of Chaos Magic
Chaos magic was created in England sometime during the 1950s-1960s. A new magical practice, during a time dominated by Aleister Crowley (1875-1947) and his Thelemic system. Austin Osman Spare (1886-1956) often thought of as the grandfather of chaos magic is looked to for his personal philosophy of the ritual magic system. Although the theory of chaos magic came from a man named Ray Shermin. Spare was previously an associate of Crowley and his Order Templi Orientis. Spare ended up cutting ties with Crowley’s order to create his own simple form of magical practice. A simple and unique way of practicing magic-using sigils.
“For a genius, is simply one who has discovered how to increase the intensity of thought to the point where he can freely communicate with sources of knowledge not available through the ordinary rate of thought” Napoleon Hill
The “Gnostic State”
To start practicing Chaos Magic, you must first Achieve the “Gnostic State”
Chaos magic is successfully executed when you can transcend past the “conscious” state of mind. The most frequently used ways to achieve this gnosis are Ecstatic gnosis, Inhibitory gnosis and Indifferent vacuity. Ecstatic gnosis is a mindlessness which is achieved through very strong arousal. This can be reached many different ways including sexual arousal, drugs, chanting, drumming and sensory overload. Inhibitory gnosis is basically putting yourself into a trance state mainly using breathing techniques. This state of mind can be enhanced by drugs, fasting or keeping yourself awake for long periods of time. The last way to reach gnosis is through indifferent vacuity. Here the spells to be cast are done so parenthetically, done so, to not raise much thought. While doing something such as just doodling sigils while listening music, as a distraction to bypass the conscious mind.
“Vacuity” by Austin Osman Spare is thought to be the mastering the role of the subconscious mind in magical operations is the crux of it, and the state called is the road to that end. Anyone who has participated in a successful ritual has experienced the “high” that this state induces.
What are Sigils and how are they used in Chaos Magic?
Sigils are symbolic representations of intentions or energy. Once these sigils are “charged” or “activated” they will help to manifest the intentions, words, or energies you intended them for. Created to bring about the desired result after achieving a state of “gnosis”. Our subconscious mind does not speak to us in words but rather pictures. This is why positive affirmations alone do not work. Creating Sigils transforms the intentions that are ingrained with our energies into a symbol. Doing so in a way the subconscious mind can understand. Sigils also need to be representative of what you want and must not include any negative affirmations only positive statements. Be sure to avoid using words like… no, not, never, don’t, aren’t isn’t, etc. There are 5 main types of sigils, which I will list and give a brief overview of…
5 Main Types of Sigils:
Intention sigil – These sigils are often created to help manifest the desired outcome. They work by focusing specified energy into a symbol. The symbol is then activated to align your subconscious, the universe, and spirit entities to manifest your desires for you.
Correspondence sigils- These sigils connect the corresponding energy of one thing in order to have access to that specific thing or its energies. For example creating sigil for an herb you need in ritual but don’t have.
Name sigils- These are created to connect with a person, place or thing by creating a sigil from the intended name.
Linking sigils- Created to form a link between one place or thing and the other. Typical uses for these sigils would be like you moved homes and you want to take the energy from the previous space to the new domain.
Combination sigils- This is when you combine multiple sigils for many differing purposes. Many times this is done by placing them on top of each other and tracing the results. This type of sigil comes in handy when you need more than one energy at a time.
How to Create a Sigil
There are multiple ways one can go about creating their own sigils. Ranging from the very complicated to the very simple. I will explain each of the 7 ways detailed below to help you find the right way to start creating sigils for your Chaos Magic practices.
7 Sigil Creating Methods
Automatic Writing Sigil- To use this method of creating a sigil requires you to have something to write with and paper. You also need to be in a quiet, comfortable setting, enabling you to enter into a trance-like state. Once there, you can connect with higher entities and ask for their help to assist with whatever questions you have. Then the magic starts to happen and your hand will start to freely write. All while the conscious mind has no idea what you are writing down. You are allowing the entity to communicate through you. You would then used one of the ways mentioned earlier to create a sigil.
Magic Square Sigil– To use this method requires you to use numerology and something referred to as “Kamea” or the “Magic Square”. It is a box with a grid pattern containing an equal number of squares horizontally and vertically. When you add each column, diagonal square of numbers, or row separately they equal the same number. You then, use numerology to give each letter of the word you want to make into a sigil a corresponding number then draw a symbol by connecting the grid numbers.
The Meditation Sigil is very similar to the Automatic Writing Sigil…
Meditation Sigil- A sigil created during meditation or trance.
Pictorial Sigil- A sigil created using existing symbols or images expressing the practitioners intention.
Runic Sigil- This method requires you to use a runic alphabet. You would then incorporate the appropriate runes together to make a sigil.
Witch’s Wheel Sigil- To create a witch’s wheel you must place the alphabet into a three layered circle. Once you break down your intention you draw lines from one letter to the next which creates your sigil.
Word Sigil- This is the most common way of creating sigils. You must first write your intention statement. You will then proceed to remove all vowels. Also, remove any repeating letters. What is left is what you will use to create your sigil. Doing so by connecting versions of these letters into stylized sigils.
How to Charge Your Sigil
After creating your sigil you will need to charge it just like you do with your other magical tools. Ideally, you let the conscious mind lose the meaning of the sigil completely before you charge it. There are many ways to go about charging your sigil and I will list them below. Remember to choose the method that resonates with your intent/desire for the sigil most
- Intense Emotion – The first option for charging sigils is by using intense emotions within you. You then focus intently on the emotion and stare at your sigil. Emotion channeling is straightforward and limitless. Pick the emotion that is closest associated with the intent of the sigil and channel it.
- Sexual Energy – This is one of the strongest tools you have. The key here is focusing intently on your sigil at the moment of orgasm
- Blood Charging- Blood is considered to be the physical manifestation of the life force within us. When charging sigils with blood you associate this force with your subconscious. You also need to accompany an emotional trance state when charging with blood. On a side note if you’re a woman you can choose to use period blood. This will give you double the power as you are using both sex and blood energies.
- Chanting Mantras – Although considered to be a more time-consuming method the “trance state method” last longer than other methods listed, enabling you to charge your sigils to an almost 100% effectiveness
- Crystal Charging –Charging sigils using crystals can be done by keeping them close to each other for a period of time. Or by performing an association ritual.
- Charging Sigils on your body – This is done by getting tattoos. For example, tattooing a patron deity on your arm to guide you through life.
How to Activate Your Sigil
Once you have charged your sigil with your intent you will need to activate it. This is the process of sending your sigil out to the universe along with the sigil working in your subconscious. There are two methods to activate your sigils. These being passive and active activation.
Active Sigil Activation: The energy is released all at once, or in a very rapid fashion. This type of activation is done through the act of destruction. Very good for quick and fiery manifestation. Use this method for things you want that are very direct and will only need to be impacted upon once. Examples of ways to activate active sigils…Drawing the sigil into the sand and letting the water wash it away, write sigil onto paper and burn or by putting the sigil into your food then eating it.
Passive Sigil Activation: This energy is released over a period very moderately and in a controlled fashion. Done so by keeping the sigil around oneself so that it can keep working and releasing energy when it’s needed. Ways to passively activate your sigil would be… drawing it on your body, carving sigils into soap and washing with it, or even drawing it in a public space where it can be seen.
Chaos Magic is all about personalizing your practice. They are magicians that can believe what they want when they want it. This form of magic is generally much less complex than ceremonial magic. You don’t need much more than intent, reaching a gnostic state, and a pen and paper to start making your dreams come true. Remember that this is powerful magic and it can be dangerous so take precautions when practicing.
